From Boring to Bold and Blue Guest Room

April 11, 2020

Our guest room was one of the most boring rooms in the house. Everything was beige. The carpet, the walls, the trim & the ceiling. And it had a very boring typical round ceiling light. It had no personality and needed some attention! My original plan was to paint the walls white and go crazy with decor but then I got brave.

So boring, right? The black and white bedding, ikea lamps, etc were all my stuff from college. It served it’s purpose but it was time for some sophistication! I think our pup is my favorite thing about the entire photo – she still loves coming to snooze for a nap in this room!

We love the furniture that’s up there so we kept the black (all from Biggerstaff if you’re local – they’re the best!). I was nervous how the black furniture would look next to a dark wall but now that it’s finished, all of my insecurities about deciding are gone. I am thrilled with this room!

Paint is New York State of Mind by Benjamin Moore

Isn’t this blue so moody and dramatic? Definitely a bold choice and I probably wouldn’t have done it in a master bedroom or a room I sleep in every single day… but wow do I love the way this room feels. It’s so cozy and calming! SO much better than all beige everything! I painted the trim and doors bright white.

We have an old house – it gets hot in the summer and cold in the winter so instead of using awesome light fixtures in bedrooms like I’d love to, we’re pretty committed fans of ceiling fans and I’m sure our guests appreciate it, especially in the summer. (New windows are at the top of the immediate to-do list so that should help too!). For this room, we just picked a boring white fan. I was okay with that because I knew I was going to get fun light fixtures on each bedside!

I fell in love with this chinoiserie bedding. I always use white bedding but keep a cozy comforter folded at the foot to add some color! I am linking the white sheets that are so well reviewed, I couldn’t resist. We put a cotton waffle weave blanket on each bed too. I like my beds super plush. For accent pillows, I had several of these Serengeti leopard print from Ballard around the house and this one just felt so right on this bed that I think it’s found it’s permanent home! I also found an adorable personalized pagoda small pillow to add on. I thought it was the perfect mix with the shams and leopard.

Best reviewed white sheets ever!

For the lights, since the fan was boring, I couldn’t wait to add some ‘bling’ with the light fixtures by the bed! The room wasn’t wired for sconces so I needed some that were ready to plug-in. I love brass and I’m so glad gold is back! I cannot recommend our lights enough. I’m very happy with this purchase and am looking at similar for our next little reno! I got the matching gold metal cord covers and am thrilled with how this turned out!

For the end table, our bedroom suite came with one matching so I added a family photo and some of my favorite books on the nightstand. I added a round gold and glass accent table with a small vase and greenery on the other side. It’s big enough to hold an iPhone to charge or a bottle of water for guests but not overwhelmingly big.

I glued black pom pom trim on our plain white curtains we already had in this room with a shiny gold curtain rod. I love how it looks & the curtains are thick enough to block a lot of the sun in the mornings. I love how relaxing this room is.

I put my old desk and chair from studying in law school in the room just because I thought it looked cute under the window for now. The closet is a walk in so luggage can go in there, on the desk/chair, or on the bench in front of the bed. The TV on top of the dresser isn’t exactly pretty but we like our guests to feel comfortable and know that some prefer a TV before bed.

To spruce up the walls, I added some original paintings I worked on and found the most fabulous brass chinoiserie fans to mount. I LOVE the brass!

I found these on Etsy from an antique store. There was only 1 set available but I search ‘chinoiserie wall hanging’ and ‘brass wall decor’ often ust to see what else I can find!

When we started the nursery in one of the other guest rooms, I moved an antique bentwood rocker into the navy guest room and I LOVE the caning on it. I think it’s the perfect color & texture for the space.

I hope you will be inspired to go a little bold with color and pattern in your guest room! I think it’s one of my favorite rooms in the house. Stay tuned for many more house updates… we have a long road ahead of us!
